Middle school students in Ms. Battey's class spent time constructing their innovative devices to capture power from body movement.
In Principles of Engineering students have been learning about simple machines (levers, pulleys, wedges, etc) and how much mechanical advantage they give you, especially when they're made to work together as a compound machine! Max Jackson led the charge on measuring the crankset while Ben Allen measured the rear wheel, Travis Vernon records the results, and Bellah Torres was quick with a tape measure!
Any idea what the pH (how acidic or basic) of your water might be? Well, S in STEAM students collected water samples from various locations at Scituate High School and from home. Home samples included kitchen sinks, bathroom sinks and rainwater. A few interesting trends students discussed included:
1. Rainwater pH was 5 (acid) among all samples. This is 100 times more acidic than pure neutral water with a pH of 7.
2. Well water pH tended to hover around 7 (neutral).
3. Tap water from a municipal home was also around a pH of 5.
Congratulations to our middle school students who earned Spartan Shout-Outs last week!

Our Cross Country Team competed in the Ocean State Invitational this past Friday. Top 30 out of 89 8th graders received medals. Shout out to Joiee and Aubree for finishing in 28th and 29th place!
In Computer Integrated Manufacturing we brought tool safety and operation testing to a close! Students in CIM received a project with real-world application. Students showed their newfound prowess in woodworking by building parking lot signs. Anybody who drove into Hope Elementary's parking lot during Homecoming weekend saw their handiwork. In these photos we see Aiden Ouillette setting his blade height on the table saw, Luke Carter concentrating on steering his board through the bandsaw, and James Jackson, Emmett Demeis, Bryce Guilmain, Stephen Cronan, and Michael Angelotti embodying the spirit of "measure twice, cut once."
Last week our JV Volleyball team hosted Ponaganset and won 2-1! Fantastic work Spartans!
The Boys' Soccer Team has been working hard this season! They competed against Central High, a D1 team, and came out with a 2-0 win last week. They also scored a second victory after traveling to PCD where Travis White scored the first goal, followed by a goal by Jason Bettez with an assist from Austin Simas, ultimately earning them another 2-0 win! Great job everyone!
The Girls' Tennis team had a Final score 3-4 last week! Wins by Norah Clarke at 2nd Singles, Keyliah Casasola at 4th Singles & Sydney Saccucci & Samantha Duarte at 1st Doubles. Congratulations to all!
The weather may not have been in their favor this week, but our cheerleaders brought their spirit and encouragement, and our Spartans played hard and took home a win with an ending score of 19 - 8. Congratulations Spartans!
8th grade students in Ms. Battey's Science class got creative last week while working on an original energy system which would allow rescue workers to capture energy from their bodies' motion during a rescue mission so they could charge their devices!
Biology students did a great job finishing up their review of the scientific method, metric system and skills required to generate dry and wet mount slides along with prepared slides!
Congratulations to our middle school students who earned a Spartan Shout-out last week! Keep up the great work!

In Principles of Engineering, students have been learning about simple machines: levers, pulleys, ramps, and the like that generate mechanical advantage. Aiden Lobao demonstrated just how much rope one needs to take up on a complex pulley system to take advantage of that mechanical advantage.
Last week the Boys' Soccer Team hosted Prout. They showed grit and came out with a 2-0 win! Both goals were scored by Jason Bettez with assists by Noah Bradford and Bryant Amaral. Great job Spartans!

Senior Night was early this year for our Boys' and Girls' Cross Country Teams. They celebrated with a wonderful gathering after their meet. Congratulations Seniors!!
